PrEP is a highly effective biomedical intervention to prevent HIV acquisition. Pharmacists are critical in supporting the PrEP system of care and advancing efforts to End the HIV Epidemic (EHE). Pharmacy services are often sought by people not engaged in the healthcare system. Thus, many states have enabled pharmacists to provide PrEP medications to improve PrEP access and adherence. California Senate Bill (SB)159 legislation allows pharmacists to provide PrEP after completing required training. Many pharmacists in California also provide PrEP through a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician.
To support pharmacists as PrEP champions, getSFcba created the California Pharmacy PrEP Resource Hub. We partnered with the California Department of Public Health Office of AIDS to develop detailing guides for pharmacists on Pharmacy PrEP and the SB159 legislation. We also have posted additional PrEP resources to support pharmacists as they strive to increase PrEP delivery in their communities.
